What does it involve?
1. Consultation:
Before going ahead with Zoom! teeth whitening near Morningside we’ll have a quick check of your teeth to make sure you are a good candidate for the treatment. For a safe teeth whitening experience, teeth should be free from calculus, and there should be no active decay or caries. After ensuring a clean bill of dental health, we can book you for a teeth whitening appointment at our Bulimba clinic.
This consultation appointment is entirely free, and should you not be suitable, then there is nothing to lose, so book your appointment here now!
2. Day of treatment:
Before teeth whitening, our Balmoral dentist will give your teeth a quick clean with pumice paste to clean off any stains. We’ll then put barriers on your gum to protect it from the bleaching gel and protective equipment such as a lip/cheek retractor and special glasses to protect your eyes to ensure a safe and comfortable whitening experience.
Afterwards, your teeth are coated with the Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed in-office whitening gel, and the WhiteSpeed lamp will then be positioned near your teeth to accelerate the whitening process. This procedure consists of up to four sessions, each lasting 15 minutes, and for each session, the whitening gel will be replaced by a new coating.
After one hour of whitening, you’ll be able to see a visible difference in your teeth, and they’ll be up to 8 shades whiter!
3. Post-treatment:
After your in-office whitening, you will receive your custom fabricated trays and whitening gel for take-home whitening (see Zoom! take-home whitening below) to use when you want to touch up your whitening, plus a Relief ACP Oral Care gel syringe to relieve any potential tooth sensitivity.
We recommend Morningside patients stay away from food and drinks that stain teeth, such as coffee, tea or wine, for a couple of weeks after teeth whitening to get the best results.
Take-Home Whitening
If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, then our at-home whitening kits are great for you.
They’re also helpful for patients wishing to touch up the results of their in-chair laser whitening treatment or even for those who are simply too busy to make it to the 2-hour appointment.
How does take-home whitening work?
The custom-fitted trays are worn over your teeth like mouthguards. This allows the product to be self-administered in the comfort of your own home. Compared to the In-clinic version of the gels, the bleaching agents included in the home-use packs are less concentrated or fast-acting, requiring a longer process.
Why use take-home whitening?
2. They are convenient and flexible without the need to lock in a 2-hour appointment and can be used in the comfort of your own home!
3. Some people choose the take-home method over the in-chair method to avoid any potential pain or discomfort. Take-home teeth whitening is slower acting, and typically patients have less sensitivity and ‘zingers’ (small electric shocks in your teeth) compared to in-chair whitening.
What should I do if I want to do whitening at home?
To begin your at-home teeth whitening journey, simply schedule a consultation with our dentist so impressions can be taken of your mouth. From these, we will make custom whitening trays tailored to your mouth, ready for you to collect in a couple of days. Afterwards, we’ll show you how to use the trays and gel as well as additional home-care instructions to maximise your results, leaving you with a more beautiful smile in just two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes teeth to stain?
Teeth can stain or discolour for various reasons, including your food and drink choices, lifestyle choices such as smoking, medication use and oral hygiene. Teeth also turn a yellowish shade with age because the enamel thins, revealing the dark layer of dentin that sits below.
How does teeth whitening work?
There are countless teeth whitening products, but most use the same basic ingredients, namely hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, containing extremely volatile oxygen molecules. When these molecules contact the surface stains on the teeth, they react by breaking down the chemical bonds holding the stains to the tooth enamel. This action effectively bleaches the stains, restoring your smile’s appearance. Other ingredients in teeth whitening products include fluoride, which helps prevent the whitening process from weakening the teeth, and minimises tooth sensitivity following the procedure.
Will teeth whitening work for me?
Yes, teeth whitening will work for everyone. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Intrinsic staining that occurs deep within the tooth, for example, can be challenging to treat, and dental veneers may be a better solution. You can book in with us for an assessment to determine if you are a viable candidate for this procedure.
Should I use in-chair whitening or take-home whitening?
The choice is a personal one that may be determined by your budget or how quickly you want to see results. In-chair whitening can be completed in a single 2-hour appointment and produces dramatic results, whereas take-home whitening can take up to 14 days to reach its full potential. Take-home whitening is also a cheaper option. Why not schedule a free consultation at our clinic near Morningside so our dentist can help you decide which teeth whitening treatment is best for you, having examined your teeth and gums.
Is whitening safe?
Yes. Under the supervision of an accredited dental practitioner teeth whitening is one of the safest cosmetic dentistry procedures.
How long do the results last?
Whitening treatments reduce existing stains, but your teeth may become discoloured over time through food and drink consumption. Maintenance whitening can help combat recurring discolouration. Through the use of our Zoom! take-home whitening kits, you can touch up your whitening, keeping your smile whiter for longer!
How many shades whiter can I expect my teeth to get?
The amount of whitening varies from one patient to another and is difficult to predict or guarantee. Generally, however, teeth may lighten between six and twelve shades on a teeth whitening guide. The results depend on the colour of the teeth to begin with and the type of stains. Teeth whitening generally works best on stains that are yellow or brown instead of grey. Surface stains are the easiest to remove, whereas heavily stained teeth may require additional teeth whitening treatments to achieve the desired results.
Should I get a dental clean before teeth whitening near Morningside?
Teeth whitening is most effective on teeth that are free from plaque or tartar. Regular dental cleans are important for your health and will also ensure the best results from teeth whitening. If you’re due for a dental clean, you can always book in for that and follow with a teeth whitening appointment.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
Teeth whitening can cause the teeth and gums to feel sensitive. While some patients experience little to no sensitivity, others may need to limit the strength of the whitening gel and the length of time it’s left on the teeth. It’s always best to speak to your dentist about ways of avoiding sensitivity and always have them carry out the whitening procedure.
